If only it were that easy.
For some reason (plateau? not enough percentage of lean protein or fish?!?) the past two weeks have been not so great. I've been going up on the scale when all signs in my diet (as far as I know) should point to down. The percentage of body fat had been going down according to that scale, however, it's not very reliable and therefore not something I would use to measure success.
This week, I was so discouraged that I just did diet, and didn't do as much exercise. I was not as aggressive because I had training downtown and I was tired when I came home. Also, I came home to the fiance, so it wasn't easy to do "me time", and also, because the fiance was home instead of at work, due to the G2 for the rest of the week, so even though he was working, he was always around and it's hard for me to workout or maintain my drive in front of him. I think I did a workout or a DDR early to mid week and then I did a walk workout the other day. I lost track. I just know that my diet was on-par and my weight kept going up.
I have been so tired and upset about this weight issue.
So, I remembered this thing that an old "dietitian" I saw told me about plateaus. "Eat a bowl of pasta" or just eat a lot and then you'll get back on track the next day. It is supposed to break the plateau phase. I felt somehow that that advice was sound and it made sense. It felt like my body was tired and it told me to feed it and just go back to the diet after. So I did. I ate something like 1,500 calories more than I planned to; I had whole wheat french toast for breakfast with peanut butter, gnocchi and ravioli for dinner, ice cream, liquor and 1/2 bag of mini chips for snacks.
I went over and I felt great. I felt comfortable and like my body ate just the right amount.
That was last night.
Today, I slept and it felt good... it felt good to sleep till 12:30 and when I weighed myself after my morning hygiene routine (probably around 1pm), I lost .2 oz.
STRAAAANGE!
Maybe this plateau-trick is right-on the nose. You have to feed your body when it's running low to help create that switch. Help it realize that you're not starving and everything's okay, you just need to shed some of that fat for health.
Well... I hope that's right.
I had eggs today for breakfast. I am about to do a workout and I'll try to make soup or some other healthy recipes to eat for today and get back on track.

Week of June 14 2010
Monday
DOWN .2LB
Had to help mom with something I believe I did a mile workout before I met her, but I didn't log anything into my Lose It! app and I had no energy at the end of the day to work out from what I recall, so I didn't do any extra workout. I had sushi with her and I went over 386 calories due to that.
Tuesday
UP .2LB
DDR
I logged it for 800 cal burn, but about half way through the Wii fell and the power cord disconnected from the unit making me have to start again. I logged somewhere around 665 calories the second time I turned it on and began from the beginning. So I logged 665.
Consumed under 112 calories
Wednesday
DOWN .2 LB
5 mile walk workout
Counted as 65 min of walking in Lose It!
Consumed under 346 calories
Thursday
NO LOSS (NO GAIN)
Wedding Workout 30 min of weights and cardio and abs with additional arm work --can't remember if I tagged on extra cardio or not, so I'll just say not.
counted ad 15 min weights
Consumed under 319
Friday
DOWN .2 LB
Walk workout (3 miles plus abs) counted it as 30 min of walking in my Lose It! app.
Consumed under 64
Not too much protein today.
Saturday
GAINED .8 LB !?!??
Twenty min interval training followed by arms of envy workout
Counted it as 10 min weights and 10 min aerobics in Lose It! app.
The week's count is 454 calories under budget so far, and somehow it went up... it's not something to cry over, but it is something that raises a bit of anxiety, as I don't understand what went wrong. It could be that I'm getting tired of flavorless, butter-free eggs for breakfast and that I need more protein and weights in my week's routine. I don't want to plateau or gain, I want to drop a lot and I want the excess weight to continue to melt off.
Once all of the unhealthy fat falls off my body I'll look and feel much better. I want that happy, positive, beautiful glow and energy for my wedding day.
Anyway. I hope I work through this and/or figure out a solution if my body doesn't just drop some pounds at the end of the week.
Time to get back to that assignment that's due tomorrow.

Set me free, why don'tchya babe?
So hungry.
I don't want to eat anymore today, but my stomach feels like it's eating itself. Intense hunger pains are not cool or productive when trying to lose weight.
I keep fantasizing about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, grabbing the individual serving bag of ketchup chips I keep in my emergency snack box or eating delicious soft, buttery and salted scrambled eggs with butter and toast and jam for a snack instead of chives and peppers and no-stick (a.k.a. no taste) eggs that I shove down my throat in the morning that's hard to chew and hard to enjoy. I just want cereals or something nice, but protein is key and I make my sacrifices. No sugar or too much salt, not too much fat and I try to up the veggies whenever I can.
I have to focus on some school stuff and business stuff with my mom, and frankly, spending time with her takes too much energy. I do not recommend going into business with your parents, at any cost. Unless you're an exceptionally Brady family, don't do it.
I'm so tired I can barely focus on any of my other goals. I have to contact some people for interviews for a book I should be writing, I need to do research for my mom, I need to do a lot and I barely had the energy to go grocery shopping today.
I couldn't workout, or cook... I'm tired and stressed and hungry. It's hard not to give in when food is the bright side of your day. Which is why Glee episodes have been so helpful--but I am finding it hard to feel the same with re-runs.
I'm just not sure how the calorie count will go down today. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the feeling will go away or that will power will win.

Let's not jinx things...
I am a little concerned about today.
So far, everything has been much better. I have been feeling great and I've lost approx 2 Lbs lately (all this week, I think), total 4 Lbs. I am so happy because it feels like the scale has been perma-stuck for the longest time, and to finally see it budge (lower) is a slice of calorie-free heaven-cake!
I did pretty good on the weekend, actually, which helped with my overall week. I ended up something like 500+ calories under budget for the week, and I didn't add all of my workouts in, which I think is helping.
I decided to do some preemptive strikes to deal with my notorious behavior... because I tend to think I can eat more when I see how much more room I have, and I like to push it to my limits, I control what I mark down so I have room for error if I do slip and go nuts.
So, in other words, I am fudging the numbers I record, so I prevent bad behavior. If I'm going to push it, I will push it good... damn that's a good song.
On Friday or Saturday, I ended up doing a DDR workout and it counted a little over 800 calories, but I felt so exhausted, I could barely keep up and I didn't have the energy to do any of it from the beginning.
I could barely lift my feet and I was wheezing like a smoker in high altitude. So, I felt like I didn't give it my all, and that I didn't burn as much as I should have because I missed or half-assed my steps. I was tired and I was ready to pass out, so I thought the best compromise would be to cut the workout calories in half and log that. So instead of logging -800 or -819... I logged -400. It was the safest and best choice I could have done, and I didn't eat anything extra that night. I just showered and put on Glee and opened myself up to this private and totally geeky joy of mine.
I did this throughout the whole week--preparing for the worst so I can be sure I have the best results and not letting myself get to the worst.
For example, The Wedding Workout from Women's Health where I combine weights, abs and cardio for my strength days, I only count 10 min of weights instead of 30 min or 50 min cardio. I don't count my warm ups or cool downs, though I believe they contribute to the total workout, and it helps keep me in check. So if I do over eat, it's not as bad because I'm more conscious not to go over now.
It sounds sort of harsh, but I feel very positive about it and I feel like it's actually a healthy change. I just set myself up to succeed rather than allowing myself to log accurate numbers and knowing how I would read that and behave psychologically in return. I am adjusting my results to prepare for my reaction.
I'm taking a page from the Count of Monte Cristo, when you think about it "every action in the universe has an equal or greater reaction in physics... and in man...", considering that, it is brave to put an action forward, but it is much wiser to act in a way that would best guide the reactions you desire.
So while the past week has been very positive. I feel that I have to remind myself of these things today, because I am very close to my daily limit due to a sushi lunch with my mother that I just had. In order to be able to get through this evening, I will have to either skimp on my meals or DDR again tonight. I hope I deal with it properly and manage to make this week another great one.

Yesterday, I decided to be a little less sedentary.
Firstly, I am proud of myself, because I was very depressed. I just wanted to cry or sleep or eat and instead, I worked out.
It took a lot of effort, and I really had to push through the 84 minutes of exercise. It was only on my last leg (probably the last 20 or 15 min) that I actually felt my endorphins kick in, but it didn't last.
I am going out on a huge limb to write this, but this whole blog is an embarrassment and something that I would or should keep to myself on a normal basis. This is my attempt to be more open and honest with myself so, I am going to write why I was upset so I can remember this moment and so I can deal with my issues better the next time something bad happens, instead of resorting to depression or overeating.
One of my best friends told me that they couldn't come to my wedding. I was really holding out hope that they would, especially since I really want them standing up there with me on my wedding day and enjoying the lead-up.
I am sure that they could afford it if they asked their parents or friends or family for help with a ticket or something... I am not making any money now, and I could confidently say that I would find a way if the situation were reversed.
It is a once in a lifetime thing and a very big moment in my life. It is important and I hoped that it would be important to them. Also I did my best to make it affordable and they had a say when I decided to make it destination, because their attendance was very important to me, and they chose to go.
They told me the news in an email and they ended it off with a lighthearted "so let's hang out soon" as if they were merely telling that they couldn't come out to see a movie.
I felt awful, also because I don't feel like I have any right to be selfish and ask them to try harder or let them know that I am upset, but I am very hurt by the decision. So, I did my best to not think about it.
I Skyped with one of my other best friends who very generously told me that I had a right to be selfish, that this wasn't selfish, and that I had every right to be hurt and to let him know that his decision was hurting me.
She also said that I am the most calm and accepting Bridezilla and we joked about me going AWOL on the actual day, because I keep the anger and disappointment all pent up inside, which only means that it's bending my nerves on the inside (which it is) and I will likely be ready to rage at the worst possible moment. Every Bride should be a Bridezilla, because weddings (or at least preparing for them) suck! Nothing goes right or according to plan, and there are thousands of dollars and setbacks and bitchy, unreasonable people to deal with along the way.
So after my workout, I played my iPod to try to drown out the sadness. I danced and I showered and I talked on Skype and then I went out for a walk with my camera just so I could have an excuse to get out of the apartment and not be sad. I would have watched a movie on my own or go out shopping, but spending money to be alone and looking at my body would make issues worse, so I just decided to go out for a walk.
It helped a bit. My allergies were raging.
But I came home dizzy, with itchy, blotchy skin and with a runny nose. I felt a little weak, probably emotional drain and physical drain. I shouldn't have let the fiance convince me to eat with him, but I did. Unfortunately, it wasn't the healthiest options either--cheddar sausages (with preservatives and fake cheese) and popcorn... the shame.
I did go over my calorie limit, and I did go up on the scale, and my stomach hurt like hell from the bad choice in food. I planned on working out today to make up for it, but I got very little sleep and I was awakened very early with several phone calls and I am feeling vertigo and a vibrating heart-rate. So rather than risk it, I'll wait till later this evening to workout or just skip today all together for the sake of my health.
I'll just try to make sure I eat wiser choices and stay within safer limits today. I'll make an effort to be even more conscious.... especially in the evening.
Speaking of limits. Another Web MD article on fast weight loss that maybe I ought to test.

Strange things keep Popping Up
Pop-up Sushi? It's available now. It's called Sushi popper.
It's interesting, although the pictures of people eating it kind of gross me out.
I kind of like the act of eating sushi with chopsticks and while sitting down. It would feel just like a snack to me if I popped it in my mouth on the go... but there are days when I could use an on-the go dinner... maybe it'd be cooler than eating a hot dog at the movie theater (which is my current thing).
On a related note, I must admit the method of switching one bad habit for a healthier one really did wonders with my date nights.
I wonder if the sushi would be a healthier and lower-calorie alternative to the hot dog I've used to replace fries, which I initially used to replace popcorn and candy.
I eat my dinner on movie date-night in the theater.
I swapped munching down on calorie-heavy snacks, by having dinner instead, which saves me from a lot of potential overeating. Plus, it's mostly protein, rather than empty carbohydrates dressed with unhealthy fats and loads of sodium.
It's been the more healthier and more doable switches I've tried so far, because it seems like something that I can easily cope with, thus it's going to be a healthier and more lasting alternative to a once very unhealthy habit.
It's funny that I never even acknowledged that I managed to make something that was once so horrible to quit actually doable and positive. I did it. I made a manageable change.
I shouldn't be so upset with myself for my setbacks and for being the way I am. I shouldn't hate myself because I'm not Carrie Bradshaw or Amanda Seyfreid. I can make it happen. I will achieve my goals, eventually, and the sooner I accept the bad stuff and get over them, the sooner I will get there.
I suppose taking small steps and celebrating the little victories is wise and effective after all.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
I can do this....
One step at a time.

Hungry for Satisfaction
MYTH BUSTING gives me great satisfaction, especially when I can say "See MOM? You're wrong!"
...but I wouldn't dare do a thing like that. It's purely a self-satisfaction that I decided to share on this blog.
I've subscribed to the Hungry Girl blog after buying one of her books. I don't follow most of her recipes or alternate them with more natural options, like butter or olive oil instead of margarine or sprays, sugar or agave nectar instead of splenda, etc... So in reality I can only use 1/3 of her recipes and they are all modified so they don't have as few calories as the 200-cal limit her recipes do... but it's fun and cute and she has some good ideas that I like working with.
On her blog I found a link to another calorie and weight monitoring website.
That's One and Two different resources to consider if my App turns out to be a failure.

Moo Does the Body Good?
I was reading another one of those WEB MD articles that I am so addicted to and it turns out, MILK really DOES the Body good!
It's a shame I can't drink the stuff or like it the way I used to when I was little.
I think I'll try to incorporate it into my workouts somehow. Maybe I'll pour a glass of 1% to have with a peanut butter sandwich after an endurance/resistance workout.
What is interesting is that the women fasted for two hours before the exercise. That's something I find interesting as I was always told it is important to eat before and after a workout (after more importantly, but still... carbs before (or best is carbs and protein) and protein after (more protein than carbs).
Also, the study used a sugary "energy drink", which may just be something like Gatorade or Red Bull... not a protein shake, so I'm wondering if Milk is actually better than protein or protein-drinks, or just better than sugar as it is a lean/dairy protein.
Anyway, I think I'll give this a shot and see how it works for me.

SIDE-NOTE
I dare you to watch this and not get wet.
I am sure my iPhone is envious of the newer model. It has an age/version complex.
At least I can upgrade it's software if I chose. Thankfully I'm still happy with mine, I just wish that it had some of the features like the unbreakable amazing glass, faster cooler networking and smart folder application capabilities, front and back camera, video editing, led light for low-light images, and the extended battery.
The size I'm cool with. Everything else is fine. Mine really is cool, it just sucks I couldn't have some of the way cooler features of this newer one. I should have never watched that video.

Count Down : 88 Days
88 DAYS LEFT
I woke feeling lighter today. But I weighed a lot at first. I was shocked to see that I went up another pound. Oddly enough, after washing my face and brushed my teeth I lost a pound so I am sure that weighing yourself before you're fully awake and before the dizzyness passes is a bad idea. The fluids in your body just haven't settled properly. I am actually the same weight today as I was yesterday.
I felt thinner somehow. Maybe it's because I feel more fragile today, but I measured myself and nothing seemed to have changed except my knees. Strange place to notice change, so I either measured incorrectly at some point or am welcoming the shrink in any place it chooses (except one... or two, rather). It's only been four days since the last measurement so this was just a test to see if my perception of my body was accurate or just an illusion.
I was going to just pour a bowl of Cap'n Crunch when I managed to drag myself into the Kitchen. But I felt strange and changed my mind mid-pour. I poured the cereal back into the box and made oatmeal with cinnamon instead on the stove. I'm proud of myself and happy that I made a healthier choice. Now I have to muster up the courage to go wash the bowl I ate from and the pot I made it in.

LOSE IT! Results
Monday June 7, 2010
Let's look at some facts that seem to be more and more fictional to me as I monitor my intake and activity with more and more scrutiny...
I have read that 3,500 calories is equal to one pound.
Thus in order to burn one pound you must eliminate that from your calorie intake.
So, to lose a pound in a week, you distribute that 3,500 calories throughout the week and apply it to your diet, your workouts, or both.
So, let's say you are someone who, with a sedentary lifestyle, would need 2,179 calories a day to maintain their current weight.
That's 15, 253 calories a week.
Hoping to lose 1 lb a week, it would make sense that 15, 253 - 2,179 = 11, 753 per week now.
That is a significant difference in eating. It means that they would have to eat only 1,679 calories per day.
Or, if they were to eat 1,800 calories per day, they could burn 121 calories a day via working out... much less painful.
The more they eat, the more exercise they would need to do to burn up the intake. However, as long as the exercise matches the necessary measures, the person should still be able to lose weight. Correct?
So, as long as someone cuts back 3,500 calories per week either by nutrition, exercise or both, they should be successful.
Same goes for someone hoping to achieve a 1.5 LB loss.
So why is nothing happening... correction... WHY IS THE OPPOSITE HAPPENING?!?!?!?!!!!???!
I did two workouts today.
One was a two mile workout with cool down but no warm up before breakfast. Then I had a bowl of psyillium fiber cereal and spoke to Carrie and Erica online for hours.
I immediately finished the conversation with a weight/abs/cardio workout from one of my Women's Health DVDs (warm up and cool down included). I think the whole thing lasts about a half hour. I logged a half hour in my Lose It! app and ignored the two mile boost this morning just to be safe. I don't want any more mistakes happening. I've even been eliminating the warm ups and cool downs from my workouts when I log them this week and still, nothing good came of it.
Let's take a look at the fruits of my previous week's labors, shall we?
Week of May 31 2010
84 Calories UNDER BUDGET!
The scale says: I have gained 2 pounds. The pounds went up and down throughout the week, but as soon as today (Monday) rolled along, the scale showed a solid 2 LBS heavier.
I understand the concept of weight going up while inches go down due to muscle gain, but I don't personally believe that actually happens till there's significant enough fat loss. Not in my case at least. I'd have to be within the weight range or slightly over for that truth to take effect, no?
I must have miscalculated somewhere.
Even though I was incredibly diligent, something went wrong.
Only ninety three days left till the Wedding.
My exercise bursts take a huge toll on me. I feel dizzy and awful after. I often feel like I am ready to faint. The room spins and I just don't feel right. My heart is even acting a little strange, but not as bad as it was before, so I'm not going to worry about it just yet.
It could all be because I try to repair damage done throughout the week with 800 cal workouts followed by another 20 or half hour workouts and that's just too much for my body to handle at a time. But it should still count it towards the weight loss... otherwise the same could be argued for binges or eating one large meal instead of few small ones... if it's counted null and void, people would be binge eating all the time and wearing size two dresses happily.
My nails are breaking in painful places. Maybe it's a sign that I need to up the protein even more.
I'll continue monitoring how things go this week. If there's no improvement, I will have to either consult someone or see what I can do to modify my program.

Getting Back on Track
As already diagnosed, I have problems with "sticking to" something. That has to change.
I created a calendar to track my weight so I can see how I progress and if there are any patterns on a day-to-day basis to see if/why I fail and how I can fix it.
Interestingly enough, I found an article about the Wii (Wii Fit, I believe) and the gamer who wrote it had surprising success in finding motivation.
It could be the gamer mentality--when you start something you just become addicted and can't help but stick to it--but he also wrote about how he started doing additional jogs after doing the Wii Fit, which seemed inspiring.
I would like to see if I could get the same results, but my only issue is that I can't find the patience to go through a Wii Fit session, as I do not feel challenged by the games.
I would love to find a cardio/endurance boxing workout which requires you to actually follow along with the wii remote and nun-chuck. So far, I haven't had any luck.
You'd think a boxing workout would be so easy to find for the Wii... always when you look for something, right?
So, I'm sticking with my intense "DDR EVERY DAY" challenges (as the announcer calls every goddamn time I turn it on)... frankly, I could do without the announcer's chatter constantly regurgitating the same phrases in a short period of time throughout the whole session. I am so sick of hearing "it's party time", "nobody moves like you", and other annoying and overheard catch-phrases.
Today I decided to do an 800 cal workout on the DDR to balance out the transgressions of the week, and I did a 3 mile walk workout focusing on the abs/core. My day is almost taken up, but now I can focus on cooking, homework (chapter work) and drafting up a business plan and questions to focus on with my mom.
FUN!

Update
My friend bailed on me last minute (we were going to celebrate his birthday and hang out, but his family decided to surprise him and take him out as a belated birthday celebration instead).
I decided to use this time wisely. I could work on my assignments for my course, but then again, why not workout and do textbook stuff in the evening when the fiance is playing computer games?
I would rather write, but I still cant' seem to find my golden notebook which has my writing outline in there for the project that I WANT to work on, and I don't want to put some work in without referencing my outline. I hate that I can't find that book! Where the hell could it be?
I wanted to start the week off with a bang, so instead of working up a 2,000 + calorie sweat, I worked up a 760 calorie sweat and followed the workout with a healthier workout for about 25+ minutes.
The 760 is a minor dent in the bloated overdose I had last week, and puts me in a minor deficit for this week, which will hopefully help this week's odds in sticking the course and actually succeeding in staying within the limits I have set out for myself.
The 25+ min healthy workout was meant to count as "today's" progress goals.
I'm going to shower, eat and go grocery shopping and maybe work on my course's assignments and chapters.

I found this on the Wedding Channel's website.
Isn't it interesting when a blogger writes some generally good information or pep-talks the reader, but doesn't follow up with any concrete advice?
This is at least getting better, but there's no real information on a detailed diet or workout plan. Even their breakfast/lunch/dinner menus do not offer information on snacks or calorie information to help understand the whole picture.
I mean, kudos for putting it all together so nicely and making it look fun and interesting. They have accomplished much more than most of the other blogs and informational pages I have seen out there on the net or in magazines and the layout itself is almost a motivational tool, but I still think there are holes of crucial information that a person trying to be fit could use and they could be more specific.

AFTER THE FOOD/FLOOD
As predicted, the weekend was a calorie-fest. The fiance's birthday made it impossible to stick to the calorie regimen and I went over... waaaaaay over.
Beer, champagne, ice cream cake, oh my!
Calorie dense foods just burst through our pores... ... gross.
So I believe I went 2,578 Calories over my weekly budget for last week. Plus the 184 over last night because of the champagne.
I am debating working it all off. Frankly, after that scare with my "health" I shouldn't force myself to workout to this extent, especially since I just recently got the green light to start working out again.
I could just start fresh for this week and see how things go, but I am afraid of doing the same mistakes and not moving forward with my goals, so I'm stuck between two potentially terrifying decisions.
I might chose a happy medium, but we'll see how it goes.
I started off the day with cereal and I'm debating which workout to follow up my breakfast with: intense calorie-burning activity--that can either leave me exhausted but slightly exhilarated that I finished it, or burned out, sick and angry at the world, feeling entitled to eat or cry myself to a comatose depressed state because of how unfair the world is while I try to calm my asthma attack (my god I am a pathetic baby)--or I could do a healthy, good-energy workout, which generally leaves me feeling positive about the world and about myself for accomplishing it, but may not give me the type of calorie burn that would help make the inevitable nutrition slip up okay.
Obviously the healthier option should be what I chose. Let the Birthday celebrations be water under the bridge and start fresh this week. But I tend to be a bit obsessive and unrealistic, so I'll let you know how it goes.
